Recent advances in technology and miniaturization have seen the development of electronic flight bags (EFBs), which has electronic manuals and documents, including automated calculation and navigation tools. A study done by United Airlines, found a normal paper-based flight bag contains an average of 12,000 sheets of paper per pilot (never really noticed). The deployment of the EFB system running on Apple iPads saved a whopping 16 million sheets of paper a year! Including saving 326,000 gallons of jet fuel because of the reduced weight on board the aircraft.
